Jagan is cut up with the appointment of Justice Ahmad Nissar Kakru as the chairman of AP Human Rights Commission. The Kashmir-born Justice recently retired as Chief Justice of AP High Court.
He came into limelight for his role in tackling the issue of disturbances in the High Court during the agitation by Telangana advocates. He was also on the bench which ordered CBI inquiry into Jagan’s assets and the investments in his companies.
The division bench comprising the then Chief Justice Nissar Ahmad Kakru and Justice Vilas Afzalpurkar directed the CBI to take up the investigation into the case.
No wonder, Jagan was furious at the choice of the judge for the post, which has five-year term. CM Kiran Kumar Reddy proposed Justice Kakru’s name for the position and TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu also gave his approval to government’s choice.
Some media reports said that Justice Sudershan Reddy, who recently retired as CJ of Guahati High Court, was considered for the job but he was not inclined to take up the responsibility.
Today’s Sakshi newspaper as well TV channel carried critical reports on the selection. They questioned the need to select a person hailing from other state. ‘What happened to Telugu self-respect’, questioned Sakshi TV.
Sakshi newspaper pointed out that Justice Sudershan Reddy told the paper that he was not consulted by the government for the position. This is contrary to what the CM’s reported statement that Justice Sudershan Reddy did not show interest for the position.
It may be recalled that Jagan group has been alleging that the CBI inquiry was a conspiracy against him by the Congress Party in Delhi. YSR Congress Party suspects Central Minister Gulam Nabi Azad’s role in the state government’s decision on the appointment to the HRC.
