Politics does not seem to suit most of the actors. Actor and Trinamool Congress member Mithun Chakraborty on Monday resigned from Rajya Sabha. He has written to the Chairman that because of his health condition, he is not been able to fulfill his duty in Rajya Sabha and that is why he is relinquishing his seat, sources added.
Mithun was nominated to the Upper House by the ruling Trinamool Congress in February last year and took oath as an MP four months later. Mithun was involved in the multi-crore Saradha chit fund scam that badly impacted TMC Government and party leaders. Mithun was also questioned by the Enforcement Directorate last month.
Mithun had earlier returned the money he received from the Saradha group to the Enforcement Directorate. He deposited a draft for Rs. 1.19 crore at the Enforcement Directorate office in Kolkata at the time. The actor had been paid that sum for his appearance on one of Saradha’s TV channels.
According to sources, a possible fear of political witch-hunt after being questioned by the ED seems to have taken a toll on the actor, who decided to relinquish his Rajya Sabha membership to wriggle out of the scam.
His close aides claimed that Mithun’s proximity with the ruling party and allegations of his involvement with the Saradha scam was taking a toll on his personal and professional life.
