Smitha made her debut in the Malayalam film Inaye Thedi in 1979. Soon due to her overt sex appeal, she switched to roles of cabaret dancers and vamp roles and thus got type casted. She garnered much notice and acclaim with her first major role in the Tamil film Vandi Chakkaram, in 1979.
