Telugu films have failed once again to command any honor at the National Film Awards. The jury did not find even one single film worthy of an award from an industry that claims to be the second or third largest in the country.

Telugu may have disappointed but regional cinema has indeed done very well.

Regional actors and filmmakers swept the top honours, including best feature film, best direction and best actor titles, at the 59th National Film Awards announced here Wednesday.

The best feature film award was shared by Marathi film “Deool” and Kannada movie “Byari”.

Marathi actor Girish Kulkarni was adjudged the best actor for his role as a good-hearted simpleton in “Deool”. Check the trailers here.

Another Marathi film “Bal Gandharva” might have picked up only two awards (the best make-up artist and the best playback singer male), but the film is visually stunning.
