YSR Congress Party chief Jagan Mohan Reddy has a distinct style of campaigning and public speaking. Many observers have noted that his body language and speech modulation have obvious elements of Christian missionary-style of preaching.
Watch this clip from Kovur campaign of Jagan. His gesticulations and pointing at each one person among the crowd reminds one of a preacher from a pulpit selling salvation than a politician seeking votes.
Jagan dons the role of a priest or a preacher who is bringing the gospel to the masses. YSR becomes the Father, whose message is being brought to the sinners by the Son.
He has a patronizing tone towards the ‘suffering masses, the poor, the old and the women’. He never forgets to chastise the rival parties, treating them on par with the Satan.
In his roadshows, the YSR Congress leader makes a conscious effort at coming across as an avatar of Jesus, who is constantly reminding people of the Father in the Heaven. Like Jesus he is always prepared to suffer the sins of the common people and take them in his stride, rain or shine.
But he never forgets what matters – fan, his election symbol. He displays it before the crowd and calls upon each one of them – especially the old and the deprived – to remember the symbol.
