Olympic silver medal winner P V Sindhu failed to get the Padma award this year, while Bronze medallist Sakshi Yadav made the cut.
The Padma awards have been announced by the Centre today. As many as 7 Padma Vibhushans, 6 Padma Bhushans and 89 Padmas have been announced in this year’s list.
While two politicians Sharad Pawar and Murali Manohar Joshi made it to Padma Vibhushan, besides K J Yesudas and the late P A Sangma, late Cho Ramaswamy is among those awarded Padma Bhushan.
Earlier, there was speculation that both Sindhu and her coach Pullela Gopichand will be awarded Padma awards.
It is indeed surprising that Olympic Silver Medalist was not considered, but Bronze winner was, by the Centre. Certainly, the north Indian lobby proved to be more powerful.
